Xuanmen Xiangzong, also known as Xuanpai, is the first of the three Taoist talisman sects and the only sect that inherits the original Taoist doctrine "Bu Xiang Shu". It originated from the ancient goddess Jiu Tian Xuan Nu preaching the world and creating the art of Bu Xiang, thus opening the origin of human life. Jiu Tian Xuan Nu is the incarnation of the universe's mythical beast Xuanniao. Around 1800 BC, she taught Huangdi's teacher Rong Chengzi the classic "Bu Xiang Shu" and created the twelve zodiac signs. At the same time, she also taught Huangdi the two classics "Xuan Nu" and "Su Nu", creating male and female sex and creating humans. She was later worshipped as the god of creation, ancestor of mankind, god of war, god of sex and god of numerology.
Around 420 BC, Huang-Lao Taoism emerged and developed into Taoism in the Western Han Dynasty. Jiu Tian Xuan Nu and her disciples were worshipped as the supreme gods of Taoism. Xuanmen Xiangzong also became the core component of Taoism in its early days, mainly focusing on bedroom techniques, military tactics and numerology.
The gods of Xuanmen Xiangzong include: the main god: the creator goddess Xuannv, the protector goddess Su Nu, the ruler god Laozi, and the savior god Yuanshi. The ten righteous gods: Yubao Huangshang, Xuanzhen Wanfu, Taimiao Zhiji, Xuanshang Yuchen, Duxian Shangsheng, Haosheng Duming, Tailing Xuhuang, Wuliang Taihua, Yuxu Minghuang, Zhenhuang Dongshen.
The important figures in the inheritance history of Xuanmen Xiangzong include: Rongchengzi, Huangdi, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Zhuge Liang, Ge Hong, Yuan Tiangang, Li Chunfeng, Wang Yuanzhi, Chen Tuan, Zhang Jixian, Zhang Liusun, Liu Bowen, Zhang Enpu, Hengshan Laodao, Chen Lang, etc.
The current development in China is controlled by the government, which believes that this is a reproductive belief that spreads the art of sex, and Taoist temples cannot be built in China.
In 2020, Jin Jiazi, the 77th generation descendant of the Xuanmen Xiangzong, decided to carry out the preaching of Xuanmen Taoism in the United States, where religious freedom is practiced. In 2021, he founded online teaching and built a Taoist temple in South Carolina, USA. The temple was officially completed and opened on July 20, 2024, and obtained approval from the U.S. federal government and the South Carolina state government to preach legally.
